Biography of Dr. Mufti Syed Babar Shah Gilani
Dr. Mufti Syed Babar Shah Gilani was born on Friday, October 3, 1986, at 6:00 AM in Karachi, corresponding to the 28th of Muharram 1407 Hijri. His respected father, Pir-e-Tariqat Syed Sultan Nabi Shah Gilani (may Allah have mercy on him), was a deeply spiritual personality, a true lover of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him), and a devout reciter of Durood Shareef. He had an extremely quiet and reserved nature, spending most of his time in remembrance of Allah, reciting the Qur’an, offering voluntary prayers, and weeping while listening to Naats in praise of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
He would cry intensely during Tahajjud prayers, often to the point of hiccups. Even while serving in a high-ranking position in the Pakistan Navy, he lived a dignified and spiritual life. Due to his sincere nature, he was beloved and respected by all. He was never seen wasting time in idle talk, never missed a single prayer, and if by chance he missed Tahajjud, he would remain regretful the entire day. His eyes were always moist with the longing for Madinah. Relatives and acquaintances testify to his lifelong piety. At the time of his death, he appeared as though eagerly awaiting the moment to meet the Prophet (peace be upon him). A clear smile was seen on his face as if to say: “I am going to meet the one I yearned for all my life.”
His respected mother was also a pious and noble woman. Even after her death, many people received glad tidings about her and would inquire about her righteous deeds because of the luminous state in which they had seen her. She would also appear in dreams and guide Dr. Babar Shah Gilani in his spiritual journey. On one occasion, in response to a question in a dream, she said she would consult the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) before replying. However, this blessed communication ceased after it was shared with others.
In 2014, she appeared in a dream and asked for her grave to be repaired due to soil entering it during rainfall. Upon scholarly advice, her grave was reopened, and miraculously, her burial shroud was completely intact. Even the knot near her feet was still tied like a shoelace. Out of respect for Islamic teachings, her face was not uncovered, and the grave was respectfully closed again.
In 2022, heavy rainfall caused the grave of Dr. Gilani’s elder brother, Syed Iqbal Shah Gilani, to collapse. His burial shroud and turban were also found intact, demonstrating that the earth does not soil the shrouds of those who serve the Prophet (peace be upon him).
Dr. Babar Shah Gilani comes from a family of saints and spiritual leaders who have spread the message of Islam across the world. His lineage includes several noble personalities whose stories would require volumes to narrate. One of his most prominent ancestors is Pir-e-Tariqat Qalandar Waqt Fana Fillah Sufi Syed Ameer Shah Gilani, whose grave, opened after 80 years, remained in a miraculous state. Thousands continue to visit these shrines for spiritual blessings.
